Music for Henry VIII

Programme: Henrik VIII. / Henry VIII, William Cornish, Robert Fayrfax, anonymous composers

Henry VIII (1491–1547) is famous for his six wives, the divorce from Rome and the establishment of an English state church with the King as its head. He was also a great music lover: he received his first lute at the age of eight, learned to play a range of keyboard and wind instruments, danced, sang, and composed his own music. The manuscript containing his works, today in the British Museum, also includes music by other composers which was performed at his court. The music, interspersed with texts from the period, will tell the story of Henry's life.
