TIME MACHINE:
MAHLER PLAYS MAHLER

Germany

Hans-W. Schmitz technician and presenter

Programme: Gustav Mahler, Edvard Grieg, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Aleksander Skrjabin, Richard Strauss

A presentation of music by Mahler and his contemporaries played by composers themselves on a Welte-Mignon reproducing piano

At a time when recording and reproduction of music were still in their infancy the German firm of M. Welte & Söhne pioneered a procedure which could record and reproduce all the subtleties of a pianist`s performance by means of perforated rolls of paper. The mechanism was built into pianos by makers such as Steinway and Bechstein. Until World War I about 2500 titles were recorded by famous pianists and composers such as Grieg, Scriabin, Debussy and Mahler. A leading expert in the field, Hans-W. Schmitz will enable us to experience some of these fascinating documents.
