Several 20th-century French composers followed Debussy’s example in composing for the colourful combination of flute, harp and strings. Based on a 17th-century motif, Pierné’s Voyage au Pays du Tendre describes the lover’s journey across the allegorical land before he arrives at his lady’s heart.
