In mid-18th century France, the nobility sought to imitate the simple lifestyle of the peasantry, creating a fashion for rustic instruments such as the bagpipe and hurdy-gurdy. Between 1720 and 1760, more music was composed for these two instruments than for the oboe and recorder, and a new generation of professional virtuosos emerged.
