Pierre Hantaï harpsichord
Programme: Johann Sebastian Bach
Following on from previous performances of Bach’s collections over the past few years, this year’s festival presents the Goldberg Variations, published in 1741 as the fourth instalment of the Clavier-Übung series. Bach’s first biographer Johann Nikolaus Forkel claimed that they were composed upon the request of a Russian ambassador desiring music of a soft and somewhat lively nature to comfort him in sleepless nights. Pierre Hantaï has been performing the cycle since the beginning of his remarkable career.
