The combination of violin, dulcimer and bowed string bass dominated Slovenian traditional music from at least the late 17th century to the second half of the 19th century when the dulcimer began to be replaced by the accordion. Originating from Velika Bukovica around Ilirska Bistrica, the Volk family ensemble have been collecting and performing Slovenian vocal and instrumental folk music, especially that of Inner Carniola.
